We are excited to announce availability of the Amazon Linux AMI, a supported and maintained Linux image for use on Amazon EC2. It is designed to provide a stable, secure, and high performance execution environment for applications running on Amazon EC2. It also includes several packages that enable easy integration with AWS, including launch configuration tools and many popular AWS libraries and tools. AWS will provide ongoing security and maintenance updates to all instances running the Amazon Linux AMI and the AMI is provided at no additional charge to Amazon EC2 users. 4th Annual AWS Start-Up Challenge Goes Global
The AWS Start-up Challenge is back with an expanded world footprint -- start-ups in 22 countries across the Americas, Asia, and Europe can compete for a chance to win $100,000 in cash and credits. This year, we will recognize 15 regional semi-finalists, 6 global finalists, and select one global grand prize winner. We're looking for the most promising start-ups that can grow into significant, meaningful businesses that leverage AWS for their infrastructure. If that's you, enter the AWS Start-Up Challenge before October 31.

Announcing Micro Instances for Amazon EC2
Customers have asked us for a lower priced instance type that could satisfy the needs of their less demanding applications, and now it's here. We recently announced Micro instances for Amazon EC2, a new, low cost instance type designed for lower throughput applications and web sites. Micro instances provide 613 MB of memory and support 32-bit and 64-bit platforms, starting at $0.02 per hour for Linux and $0.03 per hour for Windows. Micro instances provide a small amount of consistent CPU resources, and also allow you to burst CPU capacity when additional cycles are available. Read the AWS Blog for more information.

Lower Prices for Amazon EC2 High Memory Double and Quadruple XL Instances
We have recently lowered the On-Demand and Reserved prices for High Memory Double Extra Large (m2.2xlarge) and Quadruple Extra Large (m2.4xlarge) instances for Linux/UNIX and Windows by up to 19%. If you have existing Reserved Instances, your hourly usage rate starting September 1st will be lowered to the new usage rate and your estimated bill will reflect these changes later this month. We continuously strive to be more efficient, and are excited to pass cost savings on to you in the form of lower prices. See the Amazon EC2 pricing page for more details.

Amazon RDS Adds Database Engine Version Management, InnoDB Plugin Support, and Reserved Instance Options
Amazon RDS now allows you to control if and when the relational database software powering your DB Instance (i.e. MySQL) is upgraded to new versions supported by Amazon RDS. This provides you with the flexibility to maintain compatibility with specific MySQL versions, test new versions with your application before deploying in production, and perform version upgrades on your own terms and timelines. Amazon RDS also now supports MySQL 5.1.49 with InnoDB Plugin. Read the forum announcement for more details. Amazon RDS has also announced Reserved DB Instances in which you can now make a one-time, up-front payment to create a one or three year reservation to run your DB Instance in a specific Region and receive a significant discount off of the hourly usage charge. Amazon CloudFront Adds Invalidation Feature
Amazon CloudFront, the easy-to-use content delivery network, now supports the ability to remove files from all edge locations prior to the expiration date set on those files. The invalidation feature is helpful in unexpected circumstances, such as an encoding error on a video or an update to your website's css file, in which you to need to remove the file from Amazon CloudFront before the specified expiration time. Invalidation requests for the first 1,000 files each month are provided at no charge; above this, there is a $0.005 charge for invalidating each additional file. Preview Beta of AWS Identity and Access Management (IAM)
We are excited to offer you early access to AWS Identity and Access Management (IAM). IAM enables you to create multiple Users within your AWS Account and manage the permissions for each of these Users with unique security credentials. IAM eliminates the need to share passwords or access keys, and makes it easy to enable or disable a User's access as appropriate. IAM offers you greater flexibility, control, and security when using AWS. As part of this Preview Beta, you can programmatically add Users to your AWS Account, set groups and permissions for these Users, and enable your Users to call APIs for multiple AWS services.

AWS Management Console Adds Support for Amazon VPC
Now, you can use the AWS Management Console to manage your Amazon Virtual Private Cloud (Amazon VPC) resources. Amazon VPC is a secure and seamless bridge between a company's existing IT infrastructure and the AWS cloud. With the simplicity of a point-and-click web interface, customers can manage Amazon VPC resources such as subnets and VPN connections, and can also use a simple, straightforward wizard to create and connect to a VPC for the very first time. Access to the AWS Management Console is provided free of charge.

AWS Import/Export Now Supports 8TB Devices
You can now send portable storage devices to AWS Import/Export with capacities up to 8 TB, reducing the number of devices required for large data loads. For larger devices please contact us at awsimportexport@amazon.com. For full details on supported devices, visit the AWS Import/Export page.

People are attracted to source because we recognize that's where we want to be, we want to have those feelings, we want to experience that energy, because the energy, just by being in its presence, makes us feel better about ourselves.

5) Live in the moment

We only have access to our full personal power in the present moment. This is practicing the art; it's a habit to be developed, a life-skill. The extent, to which you are connecting, on some unconscious level, either into the past or into the future, is the extent to which you rob yourself of your present power. You are not going to be experiencing what it is that you want; therefore you are moving your emotional point of attraction, into negative territory. Being in the present moment is the only way you can make an emotional connection to what it is that you want, and therefore begin the process of it becoming attracted to you in future present moments. This type of emotional alignment cannot be achieved when your thoughts are in the future or past. "But how much do I need to be in the present moment? I have all this stuff to do….." You must be in the present moment enough to have enough fully-loaded, pleasurable, positive full body feelings, about what you want to attract in your life, in order to begin the process of its automatic attraction to you. Living with your thoughts at a future or past moment in time, is entirely redundant in the process of being free of stress, and attracting what you want into your life.

6) You can never be enough to

You can never be sorry enough to change this problem situation. It is only when you love yourself that you have that love to radiate to others. It is only when you are allowing the abundance to flow to you, that you then have the ability to gift it to others. Giving your energy – in any form – to others, whether it is love, forgiveness, agreement, or any energy, when your cup is not already brimming over, is the fastest route to the emotional poorhouse. If you want to help others, you must first help yourself. Others easily see through empty gestures, compliments, or favors; and, such gestures only hide you from your own emotional impoverishment/malnutrition. They are not useful, and serve no purpose in enhancing your life or others'.

7) Be selfish enough to line up with your intentions

This is important because it is only in your thriving that you have anything to offer others. If your own energy tank is not full, you have no business looking after the tanks of others. It is important to limit your own responsibilities to prevent emotions like lack of self-worth etc. Remain present and in attendance to your own needs first and you will always give others your best, automatically.

8) You are not your accomplishments

Understand that you are not your accomplishments, what you do, what you don't do, your beliefs, your ideas, your stuff or possessions, those are nothing to do with who you really are, they are the baggage you have picked up along the way, they are nothing to do with the spiritual you who wants to feel good; and stay connected to Peace. Lose your ego, and take this attitude of freedom with you in your everyday life.

9) The journey is the destination

Many times our internal dialogue says "If only I had x, then I would be happy, or, "I'll be happy when I've got…" As you go into the world and experience the contrast of your likes .vs. your dislikes, through your everyday experiences, so a new want is born. Then comes the striving (and usually struggle) in the journey towards its manifestation, which contains all the stresses and strains you wish to rid yourself of. Understand this: you'll never get it done. Because the journey itself towards your wants shows you new elements of contrast, new possibilities, new likes and dislikes, etc that change and alter your path. Thus your job here is not to get caught up in the end result but to ensure you enjoy the journey along the way, regardless of your goal, and ensure that your everyday journey contains all the same underlying experiences, emotions, and full-body feelings that you seek from your end goal, anyway. Hedging your bets against the future: The forex option

All speculation-based markets are full of uncertainty, and none more so than the forex market. A currency might be strong and vibrant today, weak and sickly a month from now. One way to guard against major fluctuations like that is through forex option trading.

A forex option is when you buy the right -- but not the obligation -- to buy or sell a particular currency at a particular rate any time between now and the expiration date of the option.

Let's say you're worried that the Japanese yen is going to drop in value sometime in the next six months. You might buy an option that basically locks in the current exchange rate for whatever period of time the option seller allows, usually anywhere from 30 days to six months. You set a number of yen, too. Say you choose 10,000 yen at a rate of 116 yen per U.S. dollar for three months. The option basically says, "I may want to sell 10,000 yen sometime in the next three months, but I'm worried the yen is going to devalue in that time. So I've locked in this rate of USD/JPY 116."

Then three months pass. If your prediction was correct and the yen has weakened in that time -- say it's now USD/JPY 122 -- then you exercise your right to sell 10,000 yen at the rate you bought three months earlier. Everyone else selling yen today (everyone who didn't have a forex option, that is) is selling it at 122 per U.S. dollar, and you get to sell it at 116.

If, on the other hand, the yen has stayed the same or gotten stronger, you are under no obligation to actually sell that 10,000 yen your option talked about. You can simply do nothing, and all you've lost is the premium you originally paid for the option.

Ah yes, there is a premium. Brokers who sell forex options charge a fee for the privilege. Think of it as insurance; calling it a "premium" certainly fits. The price of a forex option for 10,000 yen for three months might be $200, which you must pay up front. If the yen drops enough in value, you'll hopefully turn enough of a profit to make up for the $200 you had to pay. If it increases in value, and you wind up not exercising the option, all you've lost is the $200 premium.

Forex option trading used to be done only by major banks and corporations, but now many brokers who cater to individual traders offer the service, too. If you're a heavy-duty trader, a forex option is definitely something to consider to guard against future setbacks in the currency you hold.

In this article I write about how we can become content with life by learning to like ourselves and by appreciating what we have in life. There are far too many people who are comparing their lives to that of their friends and neighbours, and who then think that they are not good enough. This can make them become jealous and even depressed.

I have to admit that I was like the people I am describing above. I was not happy with the car I drove, or at the company where I worked, or at how much money I earned per year and even with the girlfriend I had. My friends seemed to drive much better cars, worked for much better employers, earned far more per year than I did and had much better looking girlfriends, sorry Claire!

I have since managed to change my attitude to life and am now very happy with what I have in life. I now look at the bigger picture and instead of concentrating my thoughts at people who I feel are better off than me, I watch the news from around the world and hear about people who are far less fortunate than I am. I certainly now feel that I am actually very lucky compared to most people who live on this planet.

I also did not really like myself, I wanted to be taller, stronger, a better communicator (I had a stutter), and a lot fitter than I was (I was quite fat). I have since accepted that there are various things that I can not change, such as my height and have therefore accepted that I am shorter than the average male. I have also thought about the positive aspects of being short, more leg room on a plane etc. Other aspects of my life at which I was not happy with, but felt I could change or improve, I have worked very hard on, and am now at a weight I am happy with and have overcome the stuttering speech impediment.

I now like myself and if other people choose not to, that is fine by me, I have enough people who do. In any case it is what I think that counts, therefore if they think I am an idiot, thats fine, because I believe I am not.

I now have an opinion that what car I drive or how much money I earn is not important. For me, health and happiness are the two most important things in life and these are things which money can not buy.

I have decided that stressing or worrying about a situation does not help me to succeed, it just makes things a whole lot worse and more difficult. I now think to myself, that all I can do in life is to try my best and if I do that I can be proud of myself.

I used to be very hard on myself, my own worst critic. I am now a lot easier on myself, I have realised that I will make mistakes and always try to learn from the experiences. My body and brain are temples and I need to be nice to them. Hopefully if I am they will reward me with my continued health.

I am now far happier than I have ever been and am determined not to slip back into my old ways of depression and negative thinking.

I hope this article helps you in your quest for a better life.

The Word Can't Does Not Exist In My Vocab

I remember when I was growing up, my parents used to become vey annoyed with me when I stated that I could not do my homework or could not do other things I had been asked to do.

They would respond with the advice that I could do anything in life as long as I believed in myself and as long as I was willing to work very hard. The word, can't, does not exist in my vocab Steve, I sometimes find certain tasks difficult however always believe that I will be able to succeed, my father would say.

He worked very hard to make me understand and to take on board this message, which would eventually prove to be a valuable lesson for me to learn. It has helped me to achieve many things and to also overcome some of the issues I had in my life.

School and employment

I was not the brightest student at school and as previously mentioned would often say that I could not complete the work through my lack of belief in my own ability. Through hard work and determination though, I left school with an impressive set of examination results. I continued this success into my work life and at the age of twenty-two had passed a number of insurance exams and had become a qualified financial advisor.

Stuttering

From the age of four I had suffered with the speech impediment known as stammering or stuttering. By my early twenties I had had enough of this struggle and went about trying to overcome the stutter. It proved to be very difficult and my progress was slow. I had superb support from my family who would always pick me up when I was feeling down and who also continued to ram home the message of never giving up. During the hours of practice I would regularly state that I could not do it, my family would not accept this and kept on at me to keep believing and to think positive.

After nearly a year of working and practicing very hard I managed to eradicate the stutter which is my biggest and proudest achievement in life.

Weight

Throughout my life I have had problems with my weight. I was never happy being fat and at the age of twenty decided to try to lose the weight. It seemed to take forever to achieve the weight and size I had targeted and as usual there were many times when I was close to giving up. From the lessons learnt and with the support from my family, eventually I did lose the excess fat.

Affirmative Action, Is It Good Or Bad?

This article does not discuss the legalities of affirmative action, I leave that to the courts. This article is solely about the philosophy of affirmative action.

According to Wikipedia, affirmative action "is a policy or a program promoting the representation in various systems of people of a group who have traditionally been discriminated against, with the aim of creating a more egalitarian society". In my opinion, affirmative action, at least as it has been instituted in this country, is wrong, harmful, racist and prejudicial. Affirmative action, at least in this country, seems to be based, solely, on race or gender.

In example, take two male high school students, both attend the same low income area high school, one is 'black' and one is 'white'. The 'black' student's family, immigrated to this country from Canada fourteen years ago, his father works full time and his mother is a 'stay at home mom'. The 'white' student's ancestors immigrated to this country eighty years ago, his father was killed, in a home invasion robbery, when he was six years old and his mother works part time as a waitress in a diner. The 'black' student has a grade point average of 3.05 with an S.A.T. score of 1085. The 'white' student has a grade point average of 3.55 and a S.A.T. score of 1270. Both students are polite and well mannered. Neither belongs to a gang or has any criminal record. Both want to go to a good university so both apply to U.C.L.A.. Under affirmatve action, which student would be accepted? The 'white' student would not be covered under affirmative action, as 'whites' have not traditionally been discriminated against, and no duty is owed him for being poor and fatherless (being poor and fatherless is not considered disadvantaged and the fact that he attended the same low income school as the 'black' student is also not considered a disadvantage for a 'white'). The 'black student, however, is considered disadvantaged and is considered to come from a race that has traditionally been discriminated against (The fact that his family recently came here from Canada, the fact that he has a parent that works full time and the fact that he has not suffered racial discrimination does not matter.). Under affirmative action, the 'black' student would not only be accepted, he would be eligible for financial aid. The 'black' student would go to U.C.L.A. and the 'white' student would probably end up at a community college.

Change the above example to a 'black student and a 'hispanic' student and the 'black' student would be accepted because 'blacks' rank higher on the disadvantaged charts. Between a 'hispanic' and a 'white' the hispanic would be accepted because 'whites' don't rank on the chart, neither do 'orientals', South East Asians or Jews. The fact that Orientals, South East Asians and Jews have been discriminated against in this country doesn't matter as the 'political correctness' police in this country do not consider them, to have traditionally been discriminated against enough, to be disadvantaged. The only student that would be ranked higher on the disadvantaged chart would be a 'black' female student. Furthermore, a rich 'black' student who attended the best schools would rank the sames as a poor 'black' student who attended a low income school.

Some universities are no longer allowed to use affirmative action as a criteria so they now use 'cultural diversity' as their criteria. To me affirmative action and cultural diversity are the same thing. Both use racial and gender profiling in order to decide who is accepted. This is America and everyone is supposed to be equal and recieve equal treatment. Racial and gender profiling tells people that some races and females are less capable than others and therefore need special help in reaching their potential. Profiling harms this country by telling people that they are not all equal under the eyes of the law. Profiling tells some people that they are not as intelligent or as capable as other people and that they can't make it without help. It tells other people that because they are 'white', they don't deserve help. It rewards some people while punishing other people. This divides the country and causes, in effect, class warfare. America is a land of immigrants who should have been melded into one great class of people, Americans. To tell them that 'blacks', whites', 'hispanics', 'orientals', etc. are all different and have different abilities keeps this country from being united. To grant advantages to one group over another is discriminitory and divisive. To tell 'blacks', 'hispanics' and others that they can't make it without outside help is to tell them that that they are not as capable as 'whites', 'orientals' and others.

Some of you may be wondering why I keep placing single quotation marks around certain words like 'black', 'white', etc.. It is because I do not like using labels like 'black' and 'white' to describe people. Other words like 'hispanic' are, in my opinion, used improperly as they tend to catagorize people from many different countries or groups into one group. All 'blacks' are not the color of black, all 'whites' are not the color of white and all 'hispanics' are not necessarily of Spain or Spanish speaking (Brazilians, for example, are classified 'hispanic' even though they speak Portuguese and most are descended from Portugal or some African country.). As far as I am concerned all people that are American citizens (naturalized or other) or live permanently in the United State Of America are either American citizens or American residents. To label them otherwise is to denigrate, isolate and seperate them from each other. Discussing concepts, like affirmative action and cultural diversity, force the use of such labels.

The people of this country need to be brought together, not seperated. Being proud of your ancestors and your heritage is one thing, being rewarded, punished or seperated because of your ancestors or heritage is something else entirely. Being rewarded because others of your race or gender were mistreated in the past is wrong and being punished for what others of your race or gender did in the past is equally wrong. How would you like to be fined for horse stealing because you are a 'white' male and some other 'white' male stole a horse over fifty years ago or even last week? Untill all people in this country are treated equally, and with the same respect, and are given the same chances, we will never be "One nation under God, indivisable, with liberty and justice for all". Discrimination is wrong, no matter who is being discriminated against.

Note: For any of you that object to my keeping the phrase "under God" in that last quote, tough. That is the way I say it. If you don't want to say it that way, then don't. Just don't try to tell me that I can't say it that way. To those of you that object to my using the word 'black' instead of the words 'African-American', again I say tough. To me 'African-American' is just as much a misnomer as 'Hispanic'. I believe that the word 'black' is improper, however, I hate to use the word American when there is a hyphen before it. To me an American is an American. I didn't write this article to be 'politicaly correct', I wrote this artice in order to say what I think. If you want 'political correctness', go elsewhere.

Everybody wants to be a journalist. The job can be exciting and in some way glamorous. Depending on where you are assigned, you are given the chance to try out new things and meet different people. Some are given assignments to cover fashion while the others are into health and some about news about the world. But whichever kind of news you are tasked to report about, a career in journalism is never boring.

But though everybody wants to become a journalist, not all can be one. There are people who are cut out to be writers and broadcasters. Here are some of the qualities that you need to possess if you want to be one:

1. A nose for the news

Writers and journalists are curious people. They love to investigate and ask questions. They are the kind of people who would go to a scene of an accident and just ask people what happened. These are not the ones who will just sit by their cars and wait for the traffic to clear up. They will get out and find out what is happening to the world. This is why journalists and writers have a nose for the news. They look at things and see something new from it.

2. Word-y people

Whether they are on print or in broadcast, these people are in love with words. They love to talk, to interview people around them and compose reports and essays. Even those in broadcast news are also basically writing. Some even have outlines before they go live. These people's world revolves around words.

3. Presence

To become successful in the business, you need to have a presence. In writing, you need to be able to establish your own style and a specialization. Not only should you have a perfect grammar but you should also have a style that calls out to people or makes them interested. There is a certain presence that can be found in an article or in certain style of writing. The same goes with broadcasters. Often, those who are generally attractive and have an overall pleasant appearance are hired as broadcasters. They have a great presence on television.

4. Skill

You don't just write anything you want or say anything you want if you are a journalist. True blue journalists are respected. Their every word are followed on by people and everything they say is like bible. In fact, journalists are often said to be the opinion-makers of the world. They decide what is hip and what is not. They give you advice and say what you should do and should not do. With this, you need to have the skill to do this. Skill comes in the way you fashion your words to make a story and in how you gather the facts and make a story that is relevant to the times and interesting to all people.

5. Integrity

This is perhaps one of the most important qualities that people in the journalism career needs to have. Because these people are basically the opinion-makers of the world, they have enormous power and hold over other industries and business. Some can use this power that they have inappropriately and even illegally. For people to really trust what you say, you need to first become trustworthy.

The different pieces of the assassination squad fit together with the precision of a Swiss watch. They carried out their mission with chilling efficiency.

On January 20, senior Hamas operative Mahmud al-Mabhuh was found dead in a Dubai hotel room. The world would not learn of his demise until nine days later.

Israel's Mossad secret service remains the prime suspect in what can only be described as a highly choreographed professional killing.

With the help of security cameras Dubai police have captured the elaborate orchestration of an 11-member hit squad as it arrives in Dubai, stalks its prey and carries out the execution with cold-blooded efficiency before scattering to the four corners of the earth.

On Wednesday, the police added 15 more names to the hit squad, including three people holding Australian passports in the names of Bruce Joshua Daniel, Nicole Sandra McCabe and Adam Korman.

Australia's Foreign Minister Stephen Smith told parliament today the Australian Federal Police (AFP), Australian Passport Office and spy agency ASIO were investigating the possible fraudulent use of the passports.

The 15 new additions to the list are suspected of using bogus passports and stolen identities, just like the previous cast of killers - 10 men and a woman travelling on false British, Irish, French and German passports.

Smith said preliminary analysis by the AFP indicated the Australian passports appeared to have been duplicated or altered.

"At this stage, Australian officials have no information ... to suggest that the three Australian passport holders were involved in any way other than as victims of passport or identity fraud" he told parliament.

The use of the stolen identities has touched off a testy diplomatic row. Britain, France and Ireland summoned their respective Israeli ambassadors for an explanation. The European Union also issued a sharply worded condemnation of the incident.

In Australia, Smith summoned Israeli ambassador Yuval Rotem to a meeting at Parliament House on Thursday, while the federal government has demanded Israel fully co-operate with a police investigation into the use of the Australian passports.

Israel, following a longstanding policy, declined to comment on what it describes as "targeted killings".

But earlier this week, a former Israeli foreign minister defended the assassination.

"The fact that a terrorist was killed, and it doesn't matter if it was in Dubai or Gaza, is good news to those fighting terrorism," said Tzipi Livni, leader of the opposition Kadima party.

As well as the names of the Australian passport-holders, the 15 names added to the list on Wednesday were travelling on British, French and Irish passports.

If the established pattern holds, the fake passports of this group will have been issued in the names of real persons, usually immigrants to Israel with dual citizenship.

Dubai police said the second group was mainly an advance team that co-ordinated logistics for the complex operation.

According to the police, some members of this team may have first travelled to Dubai as early as last March.

They also may have been aided by two Palestinian collaborators who lived in Dubai and have been taken into custody.

The police also revealed on Wednesday that the assassination squad used credit cards obtained in the US.

The team that carried out the actual killing came into Dubai a few hours ahead of their target. After arriving, they checked into hotels scattered across the city.

Toting tennis rackets or dressed in business suits, they blended in easily with other Western visitors.

They killed some time at a shopping mall. They used wigs and other disguises to change their appearance. And according to police, they communicated with each other in code through a command centre in Austria.

When Mabhuh checked into room 230 of the deluxe Al Bustan Rotana Hotel near the airport, one of the team members managed to check into room 237 - and all of the parts of the plan began to click into place.

When Mabhuh went into the city centre to buy a pair of shoes, he was followed. When he returned to his room, he was murdered.

The security cameras do not show how his killers gained entrance to Mabhuh's room, but it shows them afterward, calmly leaving the scene of the murder, checking out of the hotel and boarding flights to Asia, Africa and Europe.

The entire operation took less than 24 hours.

Mabhuh has been described as one of the architects of the pipeline that smuggles Iranian weapons into the Hamas-controlled Gaza Strip.

There has been speculation that Mabhuh was in Dubai, where many Iranian banks do business, to close an arms deal. He was also scheduled to travel to China.

Hamas has vowed to "retaliate for this Zionist crime at the appropriate time and place."

ONE was present in a big way at the G20's meeting of presidents and prime ministers in Pittsburgh.

We delivered a petition, signed by 80,000 ONE members, asking for a future G20 summit to be hosted in Africa – where leaders will have to tackle some of the tough issues around development. We also joined with the local community in Pittsburgh to paint a giant mural along the main route to the summit. The mural delivered a clear message that Africa needs to be a part of the solution to the financial crisis.

But it's going to take more than that to truly integrate Africa in the recovery. It's going to require real solutions on trade and a comprehensive approach on climate change. It will also require that leaders in the G20 listen to African input on what's needed.

LAST week, I heard on BFM Radio an interview with a Malaysian about the meaning of Merdeka. When he was asked about the so-called "social contract" that was supposedly made by our founding fathers, and whether he believed it existed, he said that if it didn't, why don't we make one now?

Who needs such a social contract? Why should there be one 52 years after our nation attained independence? You mean, after all these years of Malaysian citizens living together and co-developing this blessed land, we still need a social contract? Whatever for? Because we don't trust one another? We need something akin to a pre-nuptial contract? Hey, brother, the wedding took place 52 years ago!

By now, we should have settled in nicely to the marriage, come to understand one another better, respect one another's rights and beliefs, feel secure in the partnership. And most of all, not take each other for granted.

I don't think there ever was a nuptial agreement … er, social contract. Our founding fathers discussed the terms of agreement before independence could be achieved and most of that was incorporated into the Constitution. It is only in recent times, when certain parties began to feel a sense of insecurity in the face of perceived contentious challenges, that this idea of a social contract has been touted.

To me, it is merely a ploy to remind certain groups that they should know their place and therefore not make any demands. Thus, to give attention to such a ploy and go through the rigmarole of working out a social contract would be to engage in a messy – and unnecessary – exercise.

Our energy would be better channelled towards focusing on what needs to be done today. What is most pressing is the here and now. Letters in the English-language newspapers lament that there are now reports of racism every day in the press. Some call out to Malaysians to "embrace our differences", "make co-existence our guiding light", "uphold unity at all times". Why are we still saying these after 52 years?

Hi,

On Jan 24, I launched my book 'Profit from the Panic- How to Profit
from the Worst Financial Crisis Since the Great Depression'.

At thetime, the US market (Dow Jones) had plunged from 14,000 points
to 8,000 points (a 43% decline) and the Singapore market crashed
from 3,800 points to 1700 points (a 56% decline).

Great companies like Singapore Exchange (SGX), Capitaland, General
Electric, American Express, etc were selling 50%-90% below their
intrinsic values.

Sentiment in the market was that of FEAR. Very few people dared to
buy stocks after losing so much money in the last 15 months since
the crisis started. I on the other hand, was feeling really GREEDY
for huge profits.

My main purpose of writing the book then was that I knew that the
stock market was very much undervalued and that the market downturn
was coming near to the bottom (although I did not know exactly when
it would be). I also shared the fact that from studying the history
of past recessions, what goes down MUST always come up. In the long
term, the stock market will ALWAYS recover higher than ever before.

The book was to share with people how I was selecting the best
stocks to buy at the time. In the book, I gave lots of ideas such
as buying oil futures ETF (USO), S&P 500 ETF (SPY), Dow Jones ETF
(DIA) and China ETF (FXI), all 50%-70% down from its pre-crisis
levels. I also shared about how I selected super undervalued
companies like American Express (intrinsic value of $60) selling at
only $16 & General Electric (intrinsic value $30), selling at only
$11.

I also talked about buying Singapore stocks like Bestworld
International (intrinsic value $0.78) selling at $0.19, SGX
(intrinsic value $7.60) selling at $5 and Capitaland (intrinsic
value $3.60) selling at just $1.90. I said that anybody who wanted
to make lots of money had to grab this once in a lifetime
opportunity where it was the great Singapore and Wall Street Sale
for Stocks.

At that time people thought I was crazy for suggesting to buy
stocks while the economy was in a recession. Sure enough, the
market kept going lower for the next one month, and I accumulated
more and more stocks. What gave me the confidence then? Well, I
knew that history always repeated itself and the wise words of
Warren Buffett gave me confidence: 'Be greedy when others and
fearful and be fearful when others are greedy'. Buy stocks when
nobody else wants to buy and start selling when everyone realizes
that it is time to buy.

Then in March 2009, the stock market made a turn and stocks
exploded upwards. For the last 4 months (Mar-July) The US Market
has risen 41% to 9,200 points and the Singapore market has risen
73% to 2,600 points.

Most of my stock picks have near doubled and some even tripled from
when I bought them. Here are some of the gains I have made since
then. American Express made +69.23%, Bestworld made +83.33%,, GE
made +32% +14%, FXI made +50% etc...a six figure profit in just 4
months. To celebrate, took my family on a long holiday and brought
my kids to Disneyland.

The best part is that I am happy that the many people who attended
Wealth Academy, bought my books then, had faith in my teachings and
took action have benefited tremendously as well. Also, all the
royalty proceeds from the more than 10,000 copies sold have been
donated to charity.

over the last 4 months have asked me if it is too late. My answer
is yes and no. For some stocks, they are currently a bit overvalued
and in the short term, there should be a downward correction.

However, there are still a lot of stocks that are hugely undervalued

Be careful how you list names on your cell phone! Be Safe!

This lady has changed her habit of how she lists her names on her mobile phone after her handbag was stolen. Her handbag which contained her mobile phone, Credit card, purse...etc. ... was stolen.

20 minutes later when she called her Hubby, from a pay phone telling him what had happened. Hubby says "I've just received your sms text asking about our Pin number. I replied a little while ago."

They rushed down to the bank, the bank staff told them all the money was already withdrawn. The pickpocket had actually used the stolen hand phone to text "hubby" in the contact list and got hold of the pin number. Within 20 minutes he had withdrawn all the money from the bank account.

The lesson:

Do not disclose the relationship between you and the people in your contact list.

Avoid using names like Home, Honey, Hubby, sweetheart...... Dad, Mum etc.......

And very importantly, when sensitive info is being asked thru texts, CONFIRM by calling back.

Also, when you're being texted by friends or family to meet them somewhere, be sure to call back to confirm that the message came from them. If you don't reach them, be very careful about going places to meet "family and friends" who text you.

Amazon CloudFront Adds Access Logging Capability
Amazon CloudFront has released access logs which show you details about every request delivered through Amazon CloudFront. They contain a comprehensive set of information about requests for your content, including the object requested, the date and time of the request, the edge location serving the request, the client IP address, the referrer and the user agent. There are no fees for using the access logs, beyond normal Amazon S3 charges to write, store and retrieve the logs.

AWS Security Center and Security Whitepaper
This week, we released the AWS Security Center, a central location from which you can obtain the latest versions of our security whitepaper, receive security updates and where you can report any security concerns. In addition, we've published the June 2009 version of our AWS Overview of Security Processes whitepaper (PDF), which should help answer additional questions about physical and operational security processes for network infrastructure controlled by AWS.

ANN ARBOR, MIch. - The 9th Annual "Swing for PAR" Golf Tournament to benefit prostate cancer research and education at U-M Golf Course will be hold Monday, June 15, 2009 at the University of Michigan Golf Course, a private course recently restored to its original Alister MacKenzie design. This 18-hole scramble is hosted by the PAR (Prostate Awareness and Research) Fund and the U-M Department of Urology.

The $400 single golfer package (foursome for $1,600) includes 18 holes, lunch and dinner catered by Knight's Steak House, a special event gift, prize opportunities, and a silent auction. Skill contests feature a $100,000 Shoot-Out with four qualifiers, and a Hole-in-One will win a two-year auto lease. This year, a dinner-only ticket for $75 allows non-golfers to enjoy dinner and the evening's program, too. Sponsorship opportunities are also available and a portion of all donations are tax deductible.

"This is a great way for both men and women to show their support for a leading men's health issue. The proceeds will allow researchers to discover more effective screening tests, identify targets for treatment and develop new drug therapies," explains Gary Marley, founder of the PAR Fund. According to the American Cancer Society, more men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer this year than with any other type of cancer. Prostate cancer is one of the leading causes of cancer death in men, second only to lung cancer. One man in six will get prostate cancer during his lifetime, and one in 34 will die of this disease.

The PAR Fund was established to raise money for prostate cancer research and to promote awareness that prostate cancer is no longer viewed as an older man's disease. Men in their 40's and 50's are being diagnosed with prostate cancer, thanks to early detection from proactive PSA and DRE screenings. As a private initiative, the PAR Fund has no paid employees. Working in cooperation with the Development Office of the U-M Department of Urology, 75% of the funds raised go directly toward research and 25% to support and initiate patient and family care programs.

Hate goes viral on social network sites: group

NEW YORK (Reuters) – Militants and hate groups increasingly use social networking sites such as Facebook, MySpace and YouTube as propaganda tools to recruit new members, according to a report by the Simon Wiesenthal Center.

The report released on Wednesday noted a 25 percent rise in the past year in the number of "problematic" social networking groups on the Internet.

The report was based on "over 10,000 problematic Web sites, social networking groups, portals, blogs, chat rooms, videos and hate games on the Internet which promote racial violence, anti-semitism, homophobia, hate music and terrorism."

"Every aspect of the Internet is being used by extremists of every ilk to repackage old hatred, demean the 'Enemy,' to raise funds and since 9/11, recruit and train Jihadist terrorists," the Center said in a statement.

Examples of what the report calls "digital terrorism and hate" range from a Facebook group named "Death to gays" in Croatian to a YouTube video of a Koran being burned and various Web sites promoting militant groups such as Hezbollah, the Taliban, al Qaeda and Colombia's FARC.

The Jewish human rights group named for the renowned Nazi hunter has been monitoring use of the Internet by extremists for over a decade. It said the rise of social networking sites such as Facebook had accelerated the spread of racist and bigoted views in recent years.

It said Facebook officials had met with its experts and pledged to remove sites that violate its terms of usage, "but with over 200 million users, online bigots have to date outpaced efforts to remove them."

HARD TO ERADICATE

Rabbi Abraham Cooper, associate dean of the center, said Facebook recently removed several Holocaust denial sites, including one that featured a cartoon of Adolf Hitler in bed with Anne Frank, whose diary written in hiding from the Nazis in Amsterdam is among the best known stories of the Holocaust.

"The main social networkers understand they have a problem," Cooper told Reuters. "The company that's tried to do its best so far has been Facebook, yet we've seen that sometimes your best isn't enough to eliminate a problem."

He pointed out a YouTube user whose racist content has caused his postings on the site to be taken down repeatedly, but he simply creates a new user profile, or channel, and posts the material again, boasting that it is his 64th channel.

Extremist groups are also setting up their own social networking sites, the report said, picking out one called "New Saxon," described as "a Social Networking site for people of European descent" produced by an American Neo-Nazi group called the National Socialist Movement.

Other groups have created online games such as one created by an Iranian organization and called "Special Operation 85 - Hostage Rescue," and one called "Border Patrol" in which the player has to shoot Mexicans, including women and children, as they try to come over the border into the United States.

Leena Shehadeh, a 17-year-old who attended a presentation of the report with her class in New York, said such games and racist language are often treated as jokes by her generation.

"We didn't live through the Holocaust, we didn't live through slavery," she said during an audience discussion. "So people see it as a joke, until something bad happens."

Someone shared the following cases through an email received by The Mighty Pen website.
(1) Today I passed by a building which has an ATM machine. There was an old man looking at me. Suddenly, he called me. He said he didn't know how to read, so he gave me his ATM card and asked me to help him withdraw money from the ATM machine. I answered 'NO! If you need help, ask the security to help you.' Then he said 'never mind…' and continued to find other people to help him…

REMEMBER: ATM machines have CCTVs. If you help him he will later claim that you have robbed him or stolen his ATM card. Besides, his ATM card could be a stolen one. So please be careful of these tactics.

(2) Suddenly your house lights go off. From your window you find that your neighbours still have their lights. So you go out of your house to check the Meter Box. But once you open the door, a knife will be pointing at you and preventing you from closing it. This is when you will be robbed and injured.

REMEMBER: Even though your electricity suddenly goes off, DO NOT open your door immediately. Look around to see if there is anything unusual or if there is any noise around.

(3) This is another incident. You may have heard about it before; it is about a lady who saw a kid crying by the roadside. When she spoke to the kid, the kid told her he was lost and wanted her to take him home. The kid even gave her a paper with his house address. So she took him home. But when she rang the door bell, she had an electric shock. Later when she woke up, she was naked in an empty room.

REMEMBER: Being such a compassionate and helpful person might not be a good thing these days. Girls, please be careful. DON'T BE TOO KIND!

(4) One day, there was an old lady outside my house holding two packets of sweets. At first I thought she was our neighbour and wanted to give us these packs of sweets as a gift. But then when she spoke, I realise that she was foreigner. I could not understand what she was talking about. I guessed she must be asking for money. I sensed there was something wrong and immediately closed the door and ignored her. Later, I found she and an accomplice robbed someone else down the road.

(5) I was at the ATM machine to withdraw some money. Behind me, there was an old lady. She asked me whether I was able to withdraw my money because she said she had problem with the machine. Suddenly a small girl came up beside me. The small girl was tugging and squeezing in front of me. I thought she was just naughty and playful. But then, the small girl placed her hand inside the tray of the ATM machine where the money was being dispensed out; ready to take away my money. I sensed something wrong and immediately pushed her away. Later I realised that the small girl and the old lady worked hand in hand together. She was trying to steal my money while the old lady was trying to distract my attention by asking me questions!

REMEMBER: BE VERY CAREFUL when you are at an ATM machine and be alert. Look out for anyone suspicious around you!

(6) My parents are retired and stay at home most days. One afternoon, a young stranger went to their house and said his motorcycle had no more fuel and the petrol station was too far away, for him to push his bike there. So he asked my parents for an empty coke bottle to buy some petrol. He said he will pay RM2 for the bottle. So my mum gave one coke bottle to him. He really took out the money from his pocket, but it was a RM 100 note. He told my mum he had no small change and asked my mum to give him the change. Luckily my mum was smart. She just told him to take it for free.

REMEMBER: obviously that note is fake! Who would want to pay for RM2 for an empty coke bottle! It's very OBVIOUS that that stranger was a trickster.

(7) This happened in Bali . A newly married couple was having their honeymoon at the hotel. When both were in the changing room, the wife suddenly went missing. The husband was very anxious and went around finding her. He asked the hotel staff to help him find her. Then he thought his wife was just playing hide and seek. So he went back and waited for his wife. After a few hours, he decided to call the police. Three weeks passed and there was still no news about his missing wife. So he went back and was very disappointed and sad. A few years later, he came back to Bali , to watch a 'FREAK SHOW' in an old house. He saw a dirty and rusty metal cage. Inside there was a lady without limbs. Her body including the face was full of scars. When he had a closer look at her face, he was shocked to find out that she was his missing wife caged there and used for begging.

(8) This happened in Shanghai . A few years ago, a lady reported to the police that her cousin sister was missing in the shopping complex. But after five years, one of her friends found her cousin sister begging at the road side on one of the streets in Bangkok , Thailand . The worst thing was that her cousin sister had no more limbs and her body was tied to a lamp post with a shackle (metal chain).

(9) Let's just shorten this story. DO NOT open your house door when you hear the sound of a BABY CRYING! It might be a trap! Women in the house must be alert to this form of trick. The police said it is the work of a robber or murderer using the recording of a crying baby to attract your attention. This normally happens at night and when you are alone in the house.

(10) I read an email that was sent by my friend. Her friend, known as A, went to Luo Hu Commercial City with 2 friends, B and C. Luo Hu Commercial City is known as the Shenzhen counterfeit goods distribution center. There are many people there. It's also near to the Shenzhen train station and Hong Kong 's Luo Hu Port. C went to the toilet at the shopping centre while A and B waited outside. After waiting for a long, time they felt uneasy and went into the toilet to look for her. When they went in, there was nobody inside. Both were scared and they called C's phone. There was no reply. So they reported to the police. The police asked them whether they had seen anybody suspicious going into the toilet. Both said there was none and it's impossible to bring a person out of the toilet without them noticing! Then A remembered seeing a cleaner pushing a trolley in, and then coming out of the toilet. The police told them that were not the first time such a thing happened there. The police suspected a gang of criminals who were always attacking women in the the toilets of shopping complexes. They use cleaners to kidnap people to harvest their organs for sale.

REMEMBER: please be careful when using the toilet. Do not go to the wash room or toilet ALONE! Please at least have a partner with you.

(11) This happened in Klang, Malaysia. This afternoon (14/04/2009), while waiting for my husband in front of the bank ( MBB, Jalan Taiping, Klang), I saw a Malay lady bending down to throw some RM1.00 notes behind the tyre of a car parked in front of mine.

After throwing the notes, she knocked the car's window to tell him that he has dropped some money. Right after that, a man came knocking on my window, also telling me that I have dropped something.

Fortunately, I was not conned by them because I have witnessed what that Malay lady was doing. They came in a group of 4 (1 lady and 3 guys whom all look like foreigners; like the Arabian/ Moroccan type).They will rob you once you open your car door to check.

You would have learnt by now that stock markets always recover from downturns. They then eventually bounce back higher than before.

How do we take advantage of this? What's the best bet buy for the market rebound? Well, the simplest sure-win strategy is to just BUY THE MARKET. In other words, buy the index.

Well, in reality the index is not on sale. However, you can buy what is called an Exchange Traded Fund (ETF), which tracks the market index you are investing in. There are ETFs that track the Dow Jones Index, the S&P 500 Index, the Nikkei 225, the Straits Times Index and etc.

The process of buying an ETF is exactly the same as how you would buy any other stock. It is listed on the index like a stock.

However, instead of buying a share in one company, you are actually buying a basket of top stocks that make up that index. In a sense, an ETF is a vehicle constructed like a unit trust/mutual fund, but with the convenience and liquidity of a stock.

Why Buy ETFs Instead of Mutual Funds?

You may be already familiar with the concept of unit trusts (mutual funds). This is an investment scheme where a fund management company pools money from thousands of small investors. A fund manager will take all this cash and invest it in a portfolio of stocks. http://tinyurl.com/panic2k9

There are many mutual funds that are specially constructed to track the index. In such cases, the fund manager simply takes the investors' cash and invests it in the same component stocks that make up the index. This is known as an index fund. This basket of stocks concept is similar to the structure of the ETF.

However, the problem with index funds and mutual funds is that they usually have HIGHER SALES FEES from the banks, as well as management fees. On top of that, you cannot buy and sell your funds as easily as how you would for a stock.

The price of your fund is usually only quoted at the end of the day and you will have to go through a longer process of redeeming your money.

Most funds also lock the investor into a minimum period, which does not allow premature withdrawal without due penalties.

This means you have to hold on to the fund even when it is losing a considerable amount of your capital. Such contracts can range from a year to four years and longer.

You can get around all those charges and the rigidity with an ETF. It offers the flexibility of a stock, since it is listed on the stock exchange.

This means unlike unit trusts, you can buy and sell ETFs at any time. They have very low management fees, ultimately meaning higher returns for you.

Twitter plays whack-a-worm over the weekend [Updated]

Throughout the Easter weekend, and continuing this morning, the staff at Twitter has been trying to quell an outbreak of a computer worm created by the 17-year-old owner of a social-media Web site.

The worm, which puts a link to StalkDaily.com on Twitter users' profiles and then spews updates - the content of which has changed over time - keeps returning, even though Twitter's security team thought it had been stopped several times.

From co-founder Biz Stone, writing at the Twitter blog:

At about 2AM on Saturday, four accounts were created that began spreading a worm on Twitter. From 7:30AM until 11AM PST, our security team worked on eliminating the vectors that could identify this worm. At that time, about 90 accounts were compromised. We identified and secured these accounts.

Later in the afternoon, a second wave of the worm hit Twitter and this time it was much more intense. We got back to work and the situation was contained. About 100 accounts were compromised. Again, we identified and secured the accounts. We also identified and deleted malicious content that could work to further spread the worm.

On Sunday morning, we had another bout of attacks. Our team quickly pulled together and started fighting the attackers in real time. Again, we secured the accounts that had been compromised and removed any content that might help spread the worm. All told, we identified and deleted almost 10,000 tweets that could have continued to spread the worm.

But as is often the case with worms, which spread in an automated fashion from machine to machine, the infection is not over.

From Twitter's status page this morning:

We are currently addressing a new manifestation of the worm attack.

No passwords, phone numbers, or other sensitive information were compromised as part of this renewed attack.

The worm is apparently the creation of "Mikeyy" Mooney ~~of Brooklyn~~, who used it to draw attention to StalkDaily, which he founded. The worm uses a cross-site-scripting attack (XSS), which injects malicious code into a Web page.
